Arthropoda
The phylum Arthropoda is comprised of invertebrate, exoskeletal animals with jointed appendages. Of this phylum, there are five sub-phyla. The first of these is Trilobitomorpha, which contains the now-extinct trilobites. The second sub-phylum is Myriapoda, comprised of centipedes, millipedes and other related species. The third of these sub-phyla is Crustacia, including crustaceans and other similar water animals. The fourth sub-phylum is Hexapoda, comprised of all winged and wingless insects. The fifth and final sub-phylum is Chelicerata, including horseshoe crabs, spiders, scorpions, as well as a few extinct species.
Chelicerata
An example of an animal in the phylum arthropoda and subphylum chelicerata is Latrodectus mactans, the Black Widow spider. The Black Widow spider is native to North America. It is spotted by its telltale red hourglass on the underside of the females. It is also known as a cannibalistic species. The Black Widow's skeletal system is an exoskeleton. The inside of the animal has no support, and is held together by its thick, tough outer layer.

Crustacia
An example of an animal in the phylum Arthropoda and subphylum Crustacia is Callinectes sapidus, the Atlantic Blue Crab. The Atlantic Blue Crab is indigenous to the western Atlantic Ocean. Very popular, the blue crab food market is worth millions. The Atlantic Blue Crab, like all arthropods, have exoskeletons.

Hexapoda
An example of an animal in the phylum Arthropoda and subphylum Hexapoda is Tabanus unifasciatus, a type of horse fly. Flies are part of the insect family, meaning they have three segmented body parts, the head thorax, and abdomen. They also have exoskeletons and wings, allowing flight.
